Indoor Living
When should I select a fireplace for a new home?
As early as possible—ideally during the architectural design process.
A fireplace influences much more than the appearance of a room. Its size, shape, venting requirements, clearances, and installation details can affect framing, floor plans, finishes, and even the home’s exterior.
At Firelight, we believe in planning from the fireplace outward. Our hearth specialists work with homeowners, builders, architects, and designers to explore the possibilities, select the right fireplace, and coordinate important technical decisions before construction limits the options.
Bring your plans to our Asheville Design Center. We’ll help you get started.

Can I convert my wood-burning fireplace to gas logs?
Yes. The first step is to have someone inspect your fireplace chimney. If it is in good condition, a gas line needs to be run to the fireplace by a certified plumber or gas installer. You can decide which type of gas appliance you want to install – vented, vent free, or gas insert (direct vent). Then, measure your fireplace.
What’s a fireplace insert?
An insert fits into an existing fireplace and increases the traditional open wood-burning fireplace’s efficiency. The most common inserts are gas (direct vent) or wood.
What’s the difference in vented and vent free?
Vented gas logs burn like a real wood fire with a yellow flame that produces smoke. They must be burned in a wood burning fireplace with the damper open, so smoke goes up the flue along with most of the heat. Ventless (vent-free) gas logs burn cleanly with a lower flame that does not smoke. You can burn them with the damper closed to heat your room.
Why won’t my gas logs light?
Sometimes, it’s as easy as a battery replacement. For the system to function properly, fresh batteries are required. Even if the batteries can power a different device, the voltage may be too low. Replace batteries in both the remote and the receiver.
Why won’t my pilot light stay lit or light?
The problem could be dust or debris, the thermocouple, or the valve. Over time dust of other containments can block the oxygen depletion sensor, causing the system to shutdown. Cleaning the sensor will fix the issue. The thermocouple plays a critical role in igniting the pilot light. If it’s faulty, the pilot light won’t stay lit. While valves are durable, they can fail too. It’s important to have a professional inspect and perform maintenance annually to help prevent problems from happening.
Are vent free gas logs safe?
Vent-free gas logs are designed with built-in safety features, including an oxygen-depletion sensor that automatically shuts off the appliance under certain conditions.
However, proper installation, room size, ventilation, and adherence to manufacturer instructions are essential. Because vent-free appliances release combustion byproducts into the living space, they aren’t appropriate for every home or every application.
Our hearth specialists can help you understand the advantages and limitations of vent-free gas logs and determine whether a vented or direct-vent alternative may be a better choice.
Do vent free gas logs smell?
The odor is a personal sensitivity. Most homeowners don’t object, but it’s an individual sensitivity. We recommend visiting our showroom before purchasing one.
Will my fireplace or stove heat during a power outage?
Different products can perform during power outages. Most gas systems have back-up battery ignition, so as long as you have fresh batteries, your gas stove or logs will light.
Outdoor Living
Can I put a vented gas fireplace in a covered outdoor space?
Yes, certain gas fireplaces are designed and approved for use in covered outdoor spaces. However, not every gas fireplace is suitable for outdoor installation.
The right choice depends on the appliance’s listing, the degree of weather exposure, ventilation, required clearances, and the manufacturer’s installation requirements.
Our hearth specialists can help you select an appropriate fireplace and plan the installation for your outdoor living space.
Can I put a wood or gas stove in a covered or screened outdoor space?
Most gas and wood stoves aren’t rated for outdoor use, even if covered. It may rust in high humidity environments. While it’s common to install a gas or wood stove outside, it’s important to know the possible effects before purchasing. It may be better to choose a product that can withstand moisture and is outdoor rated.
Do you offer outdoor fireplaces for wood and gas?
Yes. We offer fireplaces for both wood and gas burning logs.
Can I put fire burners in a custom-built surround?
Yes. We offer fire pit burners in different shapes and configurations that can be selected for your custom build.
Can a gas firepit or fire table operate on natural gas or propane?
Yes. Most are available in both gas types. A natural gas line can be run to a table, or a propane tank can be used. Propane tanks have the benefit of being able to move the table, but you need to have a full tank.
